Jiang Shuiying is the heroine in Song of the Dragon River. This belongs to the second wave of 'model operas' introduced after 1969. The story is set in southwest China during a drought. The county committee decides to construct an embankment to divert the river and bring water to the hills. Jiang, belongs to a production team whose own plot of land will be ruined as a result of this diversion. She exhibits exemplary socialist behaviour when she convinces her team to sacrifice their fields to serve the wider interest of others.
