This is a poster about the opening day of the MRT extension to Boon Lay on 1 July 1990. Although the idea of the MRT was first suggested in the 1960s, construction only began in May 1982 as Singapore did not have the financial ability to complete the mammoth task. Construction of the MRT system was finally made possible as a result of Singapore’s rapid economic growth in the 1970s. Construction of the MRT was done in two phases. Phase 1 was completed by March 1988, while Phase 2, which included the MRT extension to Boon Lay, was completed in 1990.
