Born in 1948 in Singapore, Poh Siew Wah is a self-taught painter and lifelong art teacher. A recipient of several awards, including the Tan Tze Chor Art Award (1987) and a Merit Award, IBM Award (1990), Poh is known for his diverse styles ranging from representational watercolours to abstract paintings. The three ink drawings ‘Steet Scene Series (Corner Coffeeshop)’, ‘Steet Scene Series (Dominant Potted Plant)’ and ‘Tanjong Pager Food Vendor’ demonstrate Poh’s willingness to revisit and reinvestigate an old familiar genre – observed human activity in street scenes. Unlike his earlier detailed watercolours, the lines of these black and white drawings are much freer, perhaps offering greater insight into the more mature artist than the subject matter. Relying on simple outlines with minimal shading to create ungrounded forms, Poh creates a harmonious pictorial balance, where positive and negative spaces are of equal value.
