Owned by Thomas Dunman, Singapore's first Superintendent of Police, Grove Estate was a large coconut plantation in the Tanjong Katong area that stretched from the coast inland towards what is today Mountbatten Road. Its idyllic surroundings made the area a popular place for the wealthy to build homes for their weekend retreats. Known as ‘Millionaires’ Bungalows’, these extravagant buildings dotted the rural landscape. A police station was located in this exclusive residential district to provide a sense of security for its well-heeled residents.
