This porcelain jar has an everted mouthrim, short neck, broad shoulders and an ovoid body that tapers to a narrow base. There are four lugs on the neck for cord handles. The body is covered in a fish scale pattern and has moulded dragons below the lugs. The jar is covered in a thin, brownish glaze.Named after a transit port in Martaban in Burma (now Myanmar), Chinese storage jars of this type would have been used to transport preserved goods."Martaban" wares were mostly unrefined, stoneware storage jars. These rather large jars usually have bold, incised or relief decorations under a variety of glazes that include olive green, brown and black.
