On 24 November 1864, the steamship Hydaspe (centre) ran aground on the Pan Shoal in the Riau Straits, about 25 miles from Singapore. Owned by Messageries Impériales, a French shipping firm founded in 1851, the ill-fated vessel had already been involved in an earlier collision with the P&O steamer Cadiz while plying the Hong Kong-Shanghai route in 1863. Depicted in the sketch as well are the vessels that came to the aid of the stranded steamer (from left to right): the Dutch corvette Apeldoorn, the civilian yacht Picciola, the survey vessel H.M.S Rifleman, the gunboat H.M.S Leven, and the Dutch paddle-wheel steamer Dasson.
