This cocoon-shaped jar with a flanged mouthrim has a short neck and short foot. Painted with red slip bands around the neck and vertically down the body. Earthenwares such as this example served as a burial ware or ‘mingqi’.The custom was an ancient one. It is thought these wares were necessary to the deceased in the next world.
