The tin boom in the Malay Peninsula began in the 19th century, largely dominated by the Chinese and Europeans. The Malays, with a 1,000-year history of mining tin, eventually stopped as they did not have the resources needed for large mining operations. By the early 20th century, some mines were still labour intensive while others became increasingly mechanised.
