This basket featuring abstract geometric motifs is weaved by the Dayak people of Borneo. This lightweight basket is tightly woven in an interlocking fashion with two layers of weaving. It has two wooden rings attached to the opening of the basket and was apparently worn strapped to a person’s back. It was probably used as a container to gather food or for carrying heavy loads. It is widely believed that baskets were one of the first items used in Southeast Asia and they were used as containers to gather food or carry goods, or as mats for protection from the elements or to sleep or sit on.
