The Singapore River was the centre of commercial activities in Singapore. It was teeming with lighters such as ‘tongkangs’ and ‘twakows’ which were used to ferry goods from seagoing vessels to warehouses located along the riverside. These warehouses as shown in the background were built to facilitate the landing and uploading of goods.
