The Singapore River was the centre of commercial activities in Singapore. It was crowded with lighters such as ‘tongkangs’ and ’twakows’ which ferried goods from seagoing vessels to warehouses which were located along the edge of the river. The warehouses were built in order to facilitate the landing and unloading of the goods.
