This booklet, published by the Ministry of Culture, listed the benefits of Merger in terms of labour policy, trade, industrialisation, employment, education and political freedom. It was part of an unprecedented media campaign that began in September 1961 and lasted 345 days. Singapore’s leaders believed that Merger would create a larger common market and benefit Singapore in its industrialisation process. In political terms, the ruling People’s Action Party also thought Merger would neutralise the party’s radical leftist opponents across Malaya.
