This type of bowl decorated with Arabic inscriptions from the Qur’an was used throughout the Padang Highlands in Sumatra for curing illnesses. 'Bunga raya' or hibiscus flowers were placed in the bowl and then filled with water. After burnt 'kumayan' (benzoin) was added to it, the water was believed to have acquired curative properties.
