This photograph shows one of the Malay settlements that lined the coastal areas of Singapore in the 19th century. Known as "Kolek Johor", the boat seen in the foreground is mainly used for netting, trapping and handling fish. Apart from that, it can be used to ferry passengers among the islands to the south of Singapore and between villages on the shores of the Johor Straits.
