‘World Children’ (世界儿童, Shijiertong) was a children’s book series published by World Books Co. (now known as Popular Holdings Limited) through their Singapore and Hong Kong branches. The series was popular amongst Singaporean Chinese youth during the 1950s. The contents include folk tales and popular stories from China, Southeast Asia, and the West. These stories helped shaped the readers’ cultural perspective of the world as well as widened their general knowledge base. The series also served as a nurturing ground for a number of local authors who started their careers writing children’s tales.
