Most Malays lived together in kampongs or enclosed compounds, where the Malay houses were built out oftimber slats for the walls and ‘attap’ (thatch), which was derived from the ‘nipah’ palm for the roofs. The houses were built on stilts to offer ventilation and ensure that they would not be damaged by floods.
