The motif on this globular teapot depicts a peasant girl taking a break from work to read the People’s Daily (the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party). This image is a common one on porcelain wares of the Cultural Revolution and promoted the reading of state-published materials as a way to develop a revolutionary mindset. The Chinese phrase on the teapot, “学习时事” (xuexi shishi) urges people to learn and be informed about current affairs.
