This teapot is decorated with the motif of the Tiananmen and the Chinese characters, “东方红” (The East is Red). The design on this teapot probably alludes to the major dance and musical performance, The East Is Red. First staged in 1964 to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it told the history and celebrated the achievements of the Chinese Revolution through song and dance. Performances presented by Red Guard theatre groups during the Cultural Revolution often drew their inspiration from this epic production.
