Kampong Amber used to be a Malay fishing kampung (village) situated between East Coast Road and Amber Road. Residing at Siglap Plain, it was convenient for Chen to gain access to her local everyday life subjects that are painted in a Post-Impressionist style. By the 1980s, kampungs were being phased out in Singapore.
