Recognised by the small white turban, a haji, or 'hadjee', refers to a man who has fulfilled the 'haj' or Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. By 1901, there were more than 8,500 Javanese in Singapore and their numbers continued to increase with the development of rubber estates.
