A haji, or ‘hadjee’, is a man who has made the haj or Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. He wears a small white turban as a sign of accomplishment for completing the pilgrimage. By 1901, there were more than 8,500 Javanese in Singapore and their numbers continued to increase with the development of rubber estates.
