This is a rare lacquered bamboo tray used by the Peranakan Chinese in their twelve day wedding. The tray is used in the 'chiu thau' rite - a coming-of-age ceremony often seen as the most important rite of the wedding. The tray was used to hold the objects significant to the rite, like a pair of scissors, ruler, jewellery scales, red thread, mirror, comb, a spray of red ixora and spring onion.
