This is the third chapter of the famous Lotus Sutra or Miaofa Lianhua Jing, printed during the Qianlong period (1736-1795 CE). Completed at the end of the second century and translated into Chinese by the central Asian monk Kumarajiva around 406, it is the most read Buddhist scripture in China. Avalokiteshvara is formaly introduced to the world for the first time in this sutra, specifically in Chapter 25. Her powers are described in detail and her compassion is so great that when her name is called out, she will deliver the caller from trouble.
