Brooch with diamonds and emeralds

This brooch in the form of a flower, is set in gold, diamonds and two green carbocon emeralds. The diamonds look like Kalimantan stones and have been set in a gold frame, an aperture has been opened up in the gold frame behind each stone to let in more light. The sophistication of the piece can be seen on the attention to detail at the back of the piece, where even the clasp have a formal quality about them. The 'findings' or fastening pin at the back of the brooch could be factory made, a post war 1950s development. Of all Peranakan Chinese jewellery, the pieces from Indonesia reflect most intensely the varied range of influences that the community absorbed.
