Born in 1959 in Singapore, Tung Yue Nang studied Chinese ink painting under master Shi Xiang Tuo. Best known for his photo-realist painting style Tung has exhibited since the late 1970s, receiving in 2002, from The Singapore Art Society, the Tan Tze Chor Art Award (Chinese Ink Painting category). In ‘Stone and Cord’ and ‘Stone on Gold’ Tung has rendered the subject in his trademark photo-realist style. They are in a vertically elongated format (long, narrow canvasses) that Tung will repeatedly return to in coming years. Other characteristics of his symbolic works are his use of the auspicious colour red, earthly elements, and simulated paper folds, all harmonising together to express a Chinese pictorial composition as well as Tung’s interest in Eastern philosophies. Trained in Chinese painting, calligraphy and seal carving, and proud of his Chinese heritage, Tung always seeks to merge these influences with his varied artistic output.
