Chettiar ‘mejai peti’ (table box with slanted top)

With its slanted top, this chest doubles up as a writing desk. It was used by the Chettiars to keep cash, jewels, business papers, correspondences, account books and a pair of scales. It was usually placed beside the ‘kaipeti’ (hand-held box) that was also used to store business-related items used in the 'kittangi' (Chettiar shophouse).
