Boat shaped tray in the form of a naga

This boat-shaped tray in the form of a 'naga' is a fine example of a type of ceremonial tray widely used in the Malay world. In important ceremonies, valuables as well as well as sweetmeats, fruits and other luxuries were displayed using a wide variety of trays and containers. One possible use for this tray was as a sireh (betel) nut or offering tray during such ceremonial displays. Another possible use was as an incense brazier.Identifying the origins of Malay brassware is not easy as brass was widely produced and traded in the region. There are close stylistic and material characteristics between pieces from different locations.
