Large numbers of unclothed pottery figures were unearthed at a kiln site in the vicinity of Xian in late 1990s. However, these were undecorated. The present example has traces of pigment as well as imprint of textiles on the body surface, thus suggesting its recovery from a burial rather than a kiln site.'Mingqi' or burialware of unclothed figures like this piece were produced commercially for the wealthy. It it thought they would have been lavishly clothed and adorned according to status to follow their master on the journey to other world.
