For the poor and illiterate, there were various ways they could make a living in Singapore during the early 20th century. As depicted in this photograph, peddling their wares on the street was one option. Other street occupations included selling vegetables and drinks, while there were those who turned to grinding coffee, telling fortunes or pulling rickshaws.
