There were various ways in which the poor and illiterate could earn a living in Singapore during the late 19th and early 20th century. As depicted in this picture, selling satay was one such option. Peddling one’s wares, selling drinks out on the street, grinding coffee, fortune telling and pulling rickshaws were other alternatives
