In the background lies Draycott House, one of the houses which symbolised the style of the bungalow architecture that had evolved by the 1860s. Following English traditions but adapting to the tropical climate of Singapore, the houses were simple but elegant in their design. They were typically square and compact, while a carriage porch at the entrance and a verandah above it were usually built in two-storey bungalows.
