As part of the celebrations during Thaipusam, men carry elaborate frameworks on their shoulders, usually by piercing their bodies with spikes and metal hooks. Throughout the procession from one temple to another, they are accompanied by fellow Hindus who not only provide support and encouragement, but protect them from the crowds as well.
