As part of the celebrations during Thaipusam, men carry elaborate frameworks on their shoulders, usually by piercing their bodies with spikes and metal hooks. The seeming lack of pain, and bleeding, are attributed to the devotees' faith in Lord Murugan, a son of Shiva, whom they honour during the festival.
