One of the docks at Tanjong Pagar

Established in 1864, the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company experienced a slow start given the slump in worldwide trade during the 1860s. Business improved dramatically with the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. By 1885, the company secured control of 70 percent of all wharf space in Singapore, and went on to monopolise the entire shipping business.
