The oldest surviving fire station in Singapore, Central Fire Station marked a new era in firefighting when it was completed in 1909. For much of the 1800s, firefighting was inadequate and relied largely on volunteers and policemen. In the early 1900s, this changed as professional training was introduced. Central Fire Station, equipped with the latest firefighting gear and a lookout tower to spot smoke in the vicinity, was a milestone in modernising firefighting in Singapore. Gazetted as a National Monument in 1998, the station continues to serve the central part of Singapore today.
