BABA G.T. LYE | PERFORMER
Baba G.T. Lye, a veteran actor, is a doyen of Peranakan theatre. He has acted in and written Peranakan stage plays for over 40 years. He has been a wayang Peranakan practitioner since his first foray into theatre in 1984 in Felix Chia’s Pileh Menantu. Baba G.T. has not only starred in 24 wayang Peranakan plays but has also contributed to Peranakan theatre as a scriptwriter, co-director, dialogue coach and mentor to young actors. The bulk of his performances were in plays staged by the Gunong Sayang Association. There is no other living wayang Peranakan actor who has displayed mastery of the art form as he has. In 2020, Baba G.T. was recognised as a Steward of Singapore’s Intangible Cultural Heritage by the National Heritage Board. He also served as a language and cultural consultant for various projects.

DAWN MARIE LEE | PRODUCER AND PROJECT MANAGER
Dawn Marie Lee is a writer, editor and media professional who has worked in journalism, TV, film, communications and advertising over the last 24 years.
Apart from her writing and editing work, Dawn is an active heritage volunteer with research interests in Peranakan culture, Singapore heritage and Southeast Asian women’s history.
As the Editor of THE PERANAKAN magazine for 5 years (2016-2021), she led an all-volunteer editorial team to win the Special Interest Media of the Year award (2018) at the Media Publishers Association Singapore awards, competing against other commercial publications. She was also Editor-in-chief of PASSAGE, a magazine about heritage, art and culture published by the Friends of the Museum Singapore, for 3 years (2021-2024).
Dawn has been a volunteer docent at the NUS Baba House since 2015 where she guides regular heritage tours, assists with youth outreach programming, trains and mentors new docents. She is currently working on a modern Peranakan play.
ALVIN TAN | DIRECTOR AND PROGRAMME CURATOR
Alvin Tan is the Founder and Artistic Director of The Necessary Stage and a leading proponent of devising theatre in Singapore, having directed over 90 plays. Alvin was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, the Young Artist Award (1998) and the Cultural Medallion (2014). In 2010, Alvin was conferred the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. The following year, he was awarded Best Director at The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards for Model Citizens by The Necessary Stage. His works have toured internationally to London, New York, Glasgow, Australia, Cairo, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia. He was the Artistic Director of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival and Peer Pleasure, an annual youth theatre festival by ArtsWok Collaborative (2015–2017).
Alvin, a Peranakan who has resided in Katong for 60 over years, has directed four Peranakan plays: Mari Kita Main Wayang (with Felix Chia, 1994), Bedrooms (2009), The Matriarchs with the Peranakan Association (2021), and more recently, a transcreated version of Mari Kita Main Wayang for the Esplanade Waterfront Theatre (2023). Alvin is interested in contemporising the rich Peranakan heritage and hopes to do so through devising theatre employing intergenerational approaches.
AFISZAN AMAT | PRODUCTION STAGE MANAGER
Afiszan Amat completed his Bachelor's degree in Performance Making with First Class Honours as valedictorian at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in partnership with the University of Arts London (UK), where he specialised in theatre. During his studies, he received training in techniques developed by notable figures such as Rudolf Laban, Tadashi Suzuki, Jacques Lecoq and Mary Overlie's Viewpoints. He also gained exposure to contemporary practices, participatory theatre and intercultural techniques. Additionally, he learned techniques from prominent companies in the industry, including The Necessary Stage, Frantic Assembly and Centre 42, which he now utilises as a performance maker, educator, and dramaturg.
Afiszan is a passionate advocate for arts education and has conducted workshops with various institutions, including the National Library Board and secondary schools. He strongly believes that arts and theatre education can empower and contribute to the holistic learning of young people worldwide.
