These photographs were taken during the construction of the Kallang River Reservoir (now Lower Peirce Reservoir) in October 1909. The reservoir was part of a series of water management projects undertaken by the Singapore Municipal Commission to increase the water supply into Singapore in the early 1900s. First envisioned by Municipal Engineer James MacRitchie, the project began under the supervision of the Municipal Engineer Robert Peirce in 1907 and was completed in 1910. The photographs show the construction of the reservoir dam, the pavilion, and the by wash channel, all of which are still visible today at Lower Peirce Reservoir.
