Susie Wong produced numerous portraits in the 1990s, through which she grappled with questions of how women would depict women. In Untitled (Interior), a woman is sat alone on a blue couch in a room, her head is downturned, so that her hair obscures her face in its entirety. Through the use of desaturated colours, the work evokes a sombre mood and a deep sense of pathos and isolation. The work is an example of Susie’s sustained preoccupation with the domestic interior as a microcosm of women’s personal and wider social and cultural experiences. This painting draws directly from the artist’s personal experiences, “It embodies a period of my life, and the figure on the sofa is both a literal and figurative way of... forgetting.”
