This 1959 pilgrim pass was issued to Halimatus Sadiah binte Katri, daughter of Hajjah Maimunah binti Haji Abdul Karim, Singapore's first licensed female sheikh haji. Born in 1930, Hajjah Maimunah broke new ground in a traditionally male-dominated field by becoming a licensed guide for Muslim pilgrims undertaking the Hajj. As a sheikh haji, she was responsible for leading and assisting pilgrims throughout their journey, ensuring their safety and facilitating their spiritual experience. She also provided Malay cuisine to the pilgrims, offering a familiar taste of home instead of the usual Arabian fare. Additionally, she operated a lodging house above her office in Singapore, providing comfortable accommodation for pilgrims in transit.Pilgrim passes like this one are vital documents containing personal identification details, travel permissions, and other essential information required for the pilgrimage to Makkah.
