This group of samplers belonged to Alice Choo (1926-2019), some of which might have been made by her. Like most nyonyas, Choo was taught to bead and embroider at home. The designs found in her collection of samplers were wide-ranging including traditional auspicious motifs, European cross-stitch designs, geometric patterns and popular characters from animated cartoons. They were variously worked in wool, cotton and glass seed beads. Samplers were used by needleworkers as a guide. They could be purchased from haberdashers who travelled from house to house, or obtained from friends and relatives. Samplers facilitated the circulation, adaptation and experimentation of designs.
