Color-Blown Craters and Dunes #8, #10 and #11 are part of a series of works experimenting with printing techniques accentuated by organic shapes and forms. Made from rice grains, dried spices, Chinese herbal medicine plants and dried vegetables, they were embossed onto the soft fibre of the paper. The stained surfaces were then gently sprayed with water-based cel-vinyl ink in gradations. The “craters and dunes” began to form, enhancing the visual effect of the uneven surface, resulting in abstract landscapes. These artworks were produced during Yang's residency at STPI - Creative Workshop & Gallery. Using mundane materials, Yang's experiment with paper and organic matter is a commentary towards transforming everyday foods and spices into works of art that trace history, culture and economics.
