Shifting Sands #9

Fresh parcels of artificial land made out of mountains of sand on Singapore’s westernmost coast, earmarked to become part of a massive new container port project. Known as the Tuas Mega Port project, the port will be built on partially reclaimed land and it will become the largest container terminal in the world when it is completed in the 2040s. Land-scarce Singapore has had a long history of land reclamation, one that be traced back to the 19th century. This photograph is from Singaporean photographer Sim Chi Yin’s Shifting Sands series, which documents the role sand plays in land reclamation and the impact it has on the social, environmental and political landscapes in Singapore and the region today.
