Gift of Pauline Chan

This white floral mask by Andrew Gn reflects his attention to exquisite craft through simple design but intricate hand embroidery. The colour was meant to symbolise purification after the pandemic, an idea that was reflected in his Spring 2021 May There Be Light Collection. Made in his Paris atelier for a social cause in Singapore, the mask shows the diasporic designer’s connection with homeland despite distancing measures. It was specially designed for Prestige Singapore’s fundraising campaign ‘Mask for Good’ that benefits caregivers of those suffering from mental health through The Caregivers Alliance Limited (CAL). This mask thus also represents the society’s increasing concern to both caregivers and mental wellness at the height of the pandemic in 2020 and is symbolic as a fashion accessory through which philanthropic effort was done. The mask was acquired by the donor Pauline Chan. Andrew Gn is one of Singapore’s most prolific fashion designers in history, achieving high levels of critical acclaim and industry success. He is the only Singaporean to be a constant feature of Paris Fashion Week since 1995. His creations are known for their elegant, feminine, maximalist aesthetics and are finely crafted, cross-cultural, and reflective of innovation in tradition in fashion. This work is part of his major gift back to Singapore.
