This aquatic scene is lively and energetic—the shrimps’ long antennae stream freely around them in the flowing water, and the fish dart around with sinuous, elongated bodies, their tail fins fanning out behind them. Qi Liangmo is the youngest son of renowned modern Chinese painter Qi Baishi (1864-1957), whose eclectic and whimsical paintings depicted natural subjects in a free and lively manner. Qi Liangmo followed his father’s style, and like the elder Qi, was especially drawn to shrimp, crabs, and insects.
