The brick was originally a part of the tunnel kiln belonging to one of the state-run porcelain factories in Dehua county, China. It was taken out from the disused kiln with special permission from the government. The brick serves as the base for a ream of porcelain 'paper'. No two sculptures from Su's Paper series are the same as each varies in the way the papers have been presented (size of stack, way the papers rest on the brick etc). The curled up pages of this Paper sculpture imbue it with a sense of realism and movement. This series stemmed from Su's desire to create something fresh from objects which are ubiquitous yet often overlooked in our daily lives. He also hoped to challenge existing perspectives and breathe new life into these everyday items, while surpassing the confines of the Dehua porcelain tradition and himself as an artist.
