This photograph is a studio portrait of two children, a girl and a boy (probably siblings) wearing Western-style clothes. They are possibly Eurasian. Printed on the recto is the studio mark ‘P. Herrmann / Buitenzorg’. Printed on the verso is another studio mark ‘Photographisch-Artistisch / Atelier / P. Herrmann / Buitenzorg / (Java)’.Paul Herrmann was a Dutch photographer who established the studio P. Herrmann in Buitenzorg (Bogor), Java in the Dutch East Indies in the 1890s. He specialised in portrait photography.Photography studios had been established across the Straits Settlements and the Dutch East Indies by the 1860s, with the earliest studios being European-owned.
