Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. This letter is part of a collection of letters he wrote to his mother Ann, for whom he had a great love. It was written from Bencoolen, where Raffles was Lieutenant-Governor, bearing news of the death of his son Stamford Marsden.
