Aw Eng Kwang was born in China and studied art there. He founded Aw Pottery Studio in mid-1940 and developed it into a famous art centre in Machap, Malaysia. His natural creativity and strong techniques in ceramics led to the success of Aw Pottery. This work is a stylisation of the horse with its elongated neck that reaches to the ground to feed. The angular forms are cubistic while the bent hind legs bring a sense of movement and vitality. The horse as a subject matter is unusual for Aw who is more known for his figurative sculptures. The sculpture was cast without metal support that demonstrates the technical ability of Aw as a sculptor.
