This carte de visite shows a seated nyonya (Peranakan woman) with a shawl draped over her baju panjang, which is worn with a batik sarong. Printed on the mounting board is the studio mark: Cephas, Photogr. Djokja.Kassian Cephas (1845–1912) opened his studio in Yogyakarta in 1872, becoming one of only a handful of Indonesian photographers at a time when the photography market was dominated by European firms. He produced portraits for both Javanese and European customers, and served as the court photographer for the Sultan of Yogyakarta. He was also patronised by Dutch institutional clients such as the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies.
