This studio photograph shows a group of five people. A man in a Western-style suit stands on the left while a woman wearing sarong kebaya sits on a chair on the right with a child in her lap. In the centre another woman sits on a stool with a child on her lap, her face almost obscured by the child’s hat. Printed on the mounting board is the studio mark: Keng Seng Photographer Pandean SemarangPhotography studios had been established across the Straits Settlements and the Dutch East Indies by the 1860s, with the earliest studios being European owned. Chinese- and Japanese-operated studios began appearing in increasing numbers in the 1890s, and by the early 20th century, these studios almost completely dominated the industry across Southeast Asia.
